Superhero movies will one day go “the way of the Western”, claimed Steven Spielberg a few years ago. Once that genre dominated the second half of the 20th century and now comic book blockbusters have done the same for the first part of the 21st. Marvel and DC superhero movies and their sequels are churned out at an unstoppable rate, continuing to make billions at the box office.
To fully appreciate these shared universes and their epic narrative arcs, cinema-goers need to pretty much watch every outing.
The most devoted followers of the MCU and other franchises may argue the films continue to get better and stay fresh by evolving and exploring different genres and superheroes, but for some, the whole thing is getting pretty dull and saturated.
Some of Hollywood’s older and more established directors have been very critical of the comic book genre in recent years.
In 2019, Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese told Empire Magazine that Marvel movies aren’t cinema, but theme park rides, lacking the art form of “human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

While just a few weeks ago, Dune director Denis Villeneuve followed suit telling El Mundo that superhero movies are turning audiences into the undead.
He said: “Perhaps the problem is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a “cut and paste” of others.
“Perhaps these types of movies have turned us into zombies a bit … But big and expensive movies of great value there are many today. I don’t feel capable of being pessimistic at all.”
And now Gladiator and House of Gucci director Ridley Scott has joined their ranks in an interview that he later said brought “out the worst in me.”
Scott continued: “I think I’ve done three great scripted superhero movies. One would be Alien with Sigourney Weaver.
“One would be f***ing Gladiator, and one would be Harrison Ford [in Blade Runner]…They’re superhero movies.
“So, why don’t the superhero movies have better stories? Sorry. I got off the rail, but I mean, c’mon.”
He added that such “boring” comic book films are saved by visual effects, which just becomes dull for people who work on them.
