Dust from the September 11 attacks spread through several blocks in New York’s Lower Manhattan district, leaving a deadly cloud of asbestos and other toxic materials that affected thousands of people.

Data from the Uniformed Firefighters Association of New York has shown the consequences these diseases have had.

Using the data, statistics authority Statista crafted a graph showing how a wave of deaths has grown within the ranks of New York’s finest.

Figures show that the year after the crisis, in September 2002, only one New York Fire Department (FDNY) member died from a “World Trade Centre-related” death.
