When not recording music, performing or starring in movies, Elvis Presley enjoyed his days off at home in Memphis. The King loved visiting movie theatres and playing sports like American football in the park. Being such a huge star he would rent venues and spaces out from midnight to 4am or even dawn, so he wouldn’t be mobbed by fans.
Elvis would even rent out fairgrounds or roller-skating rinks like the Rainbow Rollerdome.
But according to a couple of his Memphis Mafia inner circle, he only ever hired a bowling alley out once because he didn’t get it.
The King’s cousin Billy Smith shared on his YouTube channel Elvis Fans Matter: “We finally got Elvis to go bowling one time and that was it!
“He guttered a couple of times real quick and that was it.”

Billy’s wife Jo remembered, “He said this is the stupidest game”, and Elvis’ cousin added that the star said, “Damnest game, I’ve ever seen.”
Sharing an insight into The King’s personality, Jo said: “If Elvis couldn’t do it perfect and if there was something he couldn’t do, then we didn’t do it anymore because he had to be the best or we just didn’t do it.
“We went one time at the Bowl Haven lanes in the Whitehaven Plaza and then we didn’t go anymore.”
According to the official blog of Graceland, aside from sports and games, The King was a massive film buff.
That August, Elvis saw Oscar-winning documentary The Sky Above, The Mud Below, Boris Karloff and Jack Nicholson’s The Terror, plus Hootenanny Hoot helmed by his Kissing’ Cousins director Gene Nelson.
A year later in the summer of 1964, The King watched one of his favourite movies Dr Strangelove five times and the biblical epic King of Kings.
Over the Christmas of 1965, he caught Dr Strangelove again, plus Cleopatra and Sean Connery Bond movies Dr No and Thunderball.
In the New Year, he celebrated his 31st birthday by seeing the comedy It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World at The Memphian.
